HEADQUARTERS

Taking a final leap down, Fluffums descended into a destroyed building. The roof gaped to the sky, sunlight pouring down from the black dome to illuminate what had until recently been the inside of a quaint house. From the roof, a massive hole penetrated the house down to its ground floor, as if something huge had punched it from above. Stairs crawled down the gap, cut off halfway only to resume below. Rooms laid open and exposed, two stories cut clear open from above. A cute pink children’s bed set laid scattered amid a chic dining room, the upper floor spilling down into the lower. A home office crunched under the weight of a bathtub, while a toilet perched precariously on the newly cut edge of the second floor.

Grabbing the edge of the roof with the assistance of Sticky Feet, Zeke lowered himself to the rafters, then reached up, helping the girls down. From the rafters, he grabbed Mia’s hand and slowly dropped her into the room below. Her feet dangled a foot over the ground, and he released her. She landed, then reached up to help Domi down.

Shadow jumped on Zeke’s shoulders, pounced to the rafters, jumped to Mia’s shoulders, and dropped to the ground.

“Thanks, you were a huge help,” Zeke muttered, offering Domi his hand. She took it, grabbing the rafters with the other, and swung herself down. Mia grabbed her around the waist, and she slid down to the floor. When the girls were safe, Zeke grabbed the rafters and dropped himself, landing not far from the edge of the hole in the building. The floor gave under his feet, bending down. Startled, he scurried further into the building, away from the hole.

Sitting on the rubble-dusted kitchen counter on the first floor, Fluffums looked up expectantly, waiting for them to join him. Glancing down, he casually batted a bit of rubble to the floor, then sat once more.

“Why’d we come in through the roof, anyway?” Domi muttered.

Zeke shrugged. “It’s the way Fluffums led us.”

“And I’m asking, why did we follow the dumb cat?” she muttered back.

“Cuz we didn’t know where he was going,” Zeke returned.

“That’s fair, and yet…” Domi said, shaking her head.

Mia snorted. “This whole situation is ridiculous.”

As they climbed down to the first floor, cats appeared. From every corner, from under the couch, in through the shattered windows. Some wore collars, with sleek coats and plump bodies, while some were slender, mangy and weather-worn, no collar to be seen around their bony necks. Dozens and dozens of cats, hundreds of them. They sat at the edges of the broken second floor and paced up and down the stairs.

“Whoa,” Zeke murmured. That’s way more cats than the Cat Man had chasing us. Seems like the Cat Apocalypse has more pull among cats than the Cat Man does.

Domi’s eyes burned orange. She raised her hands. “Was this a trap?”

Mia looked at Fluffums. Her eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me for the…slight deception, friends,” Fluffums said, sitting up perfectly straight. He took a deep breath.
